Grayson Highlands State Park

Grayson Highlands

Grayson Highlands State Park is known for rocky outcroppings and wild ponies. Virginia’s two highest mountains, Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, are accessible via the Appalachian Trail that crosses through this region. A popular park, you’re likely to be one of many visitors whether on foot or horseback.

The park’s amenities are plentiful. Facilities include a visitor center, campgrounds, and horse stables. Ample parking is available at Massie Gap on the primary road that runs through the state park, Grayson Highland Lane.

Arriving at the park, the first leg of the hike follows the Rhododendron Trail that leads to Wilburn Ridge. The sprawling grasslands and sparse, bushy vegetation make a popular setting for the wild ponies and cows. There are several signs that specifically state not to touch or feed the wildlife. I recommend following these rules, for these are wild animals and unpredictable by nature.

Several hiking options exist for the adventurous traveler:

1. Wilburn Ridge via the Appalachian Trail: 4.4 mi out & back hike with 889 ft of elevation gain (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/virginia/wilburn-ridge-via-appalachian-trail)

2. Massie Gap and Wilburn Ridge Loop: 2.3 mi loop with 357 ft of elevation gain (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/virginia/massie-gap-and-wilburn-ridge-loop)

3. Grayson Highlands and Mount Rogers Loop: 13.8 mi loop with 2,208 ft of elevation gain (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/virginia/grayson-highlands-mount-rogers-loop)

With the Mount Rogers summit in mind, we headed toward the Mt. Rogers Spur Trail, following the Appalachian Trail’s white blazes. Along the trail are blueberry bushes, rhododendrons, and coniferous trees. The path is very rocky and there is some climbing involved along the way, but it’s well worth the energy to catch the many panoramic views that come with each towering rock formation. Tired from the exertion, the doggos even took a breather on the peak of a craggy rock while we enjoyed the vista. It was absolutely breathtaking.

We never made it to the Mount Rogers summit and turned back sooner than planned. The closest version of the hike is option #1: Wilburn Ridge via the Appalachian Trail. However, we’d like to return to continue this journey, perhaps camping out on the grounds. Beware of the wind and changes in temperatures – the climate in these higher altitudes are fickle and can be severe.

The Wilburn Ridge hike via the Appalachian Trail was challenging, yet satisfying. A lovely day hike with beautiful views that are sure to fill up your camera roll (as it did mine). I look forward to coming back to the Grayson Highlands State Park and spending more time exploring the backcountry.
