Nature in the City
Richmond City has more to it than cobblestone streets and business epicenters. The natural parks teem with wildlife, which sometimes even find themselves in the most surprising locations.
Beyond the everyday pigeon found throughout any city, black-capped chickadees commonly roost in windowsills and other nooks and crannies found among the large brick warehouses that fill the area of Shockoe Bottom. The summer heat lures buzzing bees to dandelions and trumpet vines. The vivid flowers of the crape myrtles and massive blossoms of the magnolia trees permeate the air with their rich floral aromas. At the turn of the seasons, the rains of fall bring moisture to burgeoning mushrooms, and falling leaves in yellow, orange, and red fill the air with their sweet rotting musk.
