Take a Beautiful Stroll through Downtown Charlottesville:
I arrived at Charlottesville’s Main Street around 11:20am, on a sunny Tuesday morning. My first impression soaked in the light foot traffic, which would be standard for mid-week. The locals walking the street were more consistent with wearing masks than the locals of Richmond, as far as I’ve seen. Considering the wide berth of the walkway, I found it surprising how the collective was persistent enough to have a shared purpose in not spreading COVID. Thus, I promptly donned my mask in respect for the masses.
I loved the large shade trees that hovered above me as I traversed down the walkway. Gazing around at old buildings with chic little shops, I appreciated the general ambience of the main drag in Charlottesville. There’s a surprising bit of construction in the area, however, which reminds us of the constant growth of an otherwise small city.
My initial intention was to grab a cup of coffee and some breakfast on a patio to start my adventure. So I strolled up and down the brick walkway and perused my options. I was truly impressed by the outdoor patios erected down the center line of Main Street’s wide berth. Many of them were turned into warm, inviting spaces with greenery and shading umbrellas. It was massively appealing, and already popularly attended by other patrons.
Along with quiet window shopping and people milling about, there were some surprising little gems to bring a smile to one’s face. Decorative art pieces and light graffiti featuring COVID masks and Black Lives Matter protests subtlety decorate hidden alcoves off the main drag.
Main Street, Charlottesville is a lovely promenade to walk down. Even during times of social distancing, you’ll find a haven of art, fine dining, and shopping.
